Drywall — often called sheetrock, gypsum board, or wallboard — is the finish surface for most interior walls and ceilings in North America. Ordering too few sheets delays the job; ordering too many wastes money and truck space. Start with a simple sketch of each room. Label wall lengths and ceiling dimensions. For each wall segment, multiply length × height. Add segments together or use one average wall length × height × number of walls when sections match, as our tool does.
Add ceiling area if you are hanging the lid: length × width of the room footprint. Subtract large openings only when you are confident recovered scraps will not be used elsewhere — many estimators keep full wall rectangles for safety. Divide total square footage by sheet coverage (32 sq ft for 4×8), apply waste, round up. That is the core of every drywall sheet estimation workflow.
Sheets are sold in 4-foot widths and 8-, 10-, or 12-foot lengths. Coverage is width × length: 32, 40, or 48 square feet. A 12×12 room with 8-foot walls and four walls has 12×8×4 = 384 sq ft of wall area, plus 144 sq ft of ceiling = 528 sq ft. With 10% waste, about 581 sq ft ÷ 32 ≈ 19 sheets — matching what you get from our bedroom example preset.
Always round up to whole sheets. Big-box stores rarely sell partial boards. On multi-room jobs, sum each room then add one contingency sheet per truckload for damage.
Remodels add demolition, texture matching, and phased occupancy. Measure only surfaces you will hang — patch jobs might be one wall, not four. Check existing thickness so new board flush-mounts with old drywall; mixing 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch without shimming shows at joints.

Basements need moisture strategy before board goes up. Frame with pressure-treated bottom plates on concrete, insulate per climate zone, and consider vapor retarder placement. Use moisture-resistant or mold-resistant board on below-grade walls; some codes require foam board or drainage before framing.
Ceilings in basements are often lower — 4×8 sheets may work without vertical joints. Include ceiling area in totals; basement ceilings are frequently forgotten. Coordinate with concrete work if you are pouring walks or pads in the same renovation phase.
1/2 inch is standard for residential walls and many ceilings. 5/8 inch adds fire rating and stiffness on ceilings with 24-inch on-center framing or long spans. 1/4 inch bends on curved walls and overlays. Garages attached to living space often need Type X 5/8 on shared walls — verify locally.
Soundproof board is denser and heavier; plan extra hands for ceilings. Lightweight board reduces fatigue on overhead work. Thickness does not change area math but affects screw length and screw gun depth settings.
Hang ceilings first on residential jobs so wall boards capture ceiling edges. Screw field spacing is typically 12 inches on walls and 8 inches on ceilings for 1/2 inch board — tighter at edges. Stagger vertical joints between courses. Leave a 1/8-inch gap at floor; cover with baseboard.
Factory edges are tapered for tape; cut ends are butts requiring more compound. Plan layout so tapered joints meet, minimizing butt lines at eye level across large walls.
Green or purple moisture-resistant board suits bathrooms and laundry rooms but is not a substitute for cement board or waterproof membrane in direct wet zones inside showers. Use cement board or foam backer board plus liquid membrane where tile meets water.
Basements benefit from mold-resistant paper faces even when not “wet” rooms — humidity swings matter. Never hang standard board directly against uninsulated cold concrete; build a ventilated cavity or use approved systems.
Finishing levels range from Level 0 (no finish) to Level 5 (skim entire surface). Most homes are Level 4: tape, three coats on joints, sand, prime. Joint compound consumption varies more than sheet count — textured ceilings and butt-heavy layouts need extra mud.
Tape choices include paper (stronger, harder for beginners) and mesh (fast, not ideal for butts). This tool estimates one roll per 400 sq ft as a planning average; complex jobs need more.
