Closet carpet quotes still land in square yards at the desk even though you measured in feet at the rod. Punch inside dimensions here and you'll get sq ft, sq yd, and perimeter before you pick pad or tack strip. Waste and roll width breaks belong in the carpet material tool—this page is the raw rectangle only.

What affects floor area measurements?

Square-yard quoting. Carpet dealers price rolls in sq yd—143 sq ft becomes 15.89 sq yd on the ticket, not 143.[1]

Inside wall rule. Measure where the pile meets the baseboard, not the door jamb outside the closet.

Bi-fold door swing. Include the full rectangle under the door stack—don't subtract the door footprint.

Shelf pole zone. Floor still gets carpet under fixed shelving unless you're leaving bare melamine.

Worked example

Example: An 11 ft × 13 ft walk-in closet = 143 sq ft. For carpet prep: 143 ÷ 9 = 15.89 sq yd (dealers often round to 16 yd once you add pattern waste). Perimeter = 2 × (11 + 13) = 48 ft for tack strip layout—not deducting the door opening.

How we calculated this

Area (sq ft) = Length × Width (in feet)

Square yards = Square feet ÷ 9

Square meters = Square feet × 0.092903

Perimeter (ft) = 2 × (Length + Width)

Questions & Answers

How many sq yd in an 11×13 closet?

143 sq ft ÷ 9 = 15.89 sq yd. Add waste in your carpet calculator before you round up for the roll.

Why do carpet stores use sq yd?

Roll goods are traditionally sold by the square yard in the U.S.—sq ft is fine for pad specs but the desk quote is usually yd.[2]

Do I deduct the closet door opening?

No for face area—you still cover the floor under the door swing. Deduct only if you're leaving that zone bare.

Where does carpet waste get added?

Not here—take sq yd forward to our flooring calculator or dealer worksheet with 10–15% for seams and pattern match.
