Flooring Calculators

Measure rooms once and convert square footage into cartons, boxes, tiles, carpet square yards, grout, or epoxy gallons, with the right waste factor for your layout.

Quick answer: flooring needed = room area (ft²) × (1 + waste). Use about 5–10% waste for straight plank or tile layouts and 15% or more for diagonal and herringbone patterns. Then divide by the coverage per carton and round up to whole boxes.

Measuring a room for flooring

  1. Measure length and width at the widest points, to the nearest inch.
  2. Split L-shaped or irregular rooms into rectangles and add the areas.
  3. Include closets and areas under appliances that will receive flooring.
  4. Add waste for cuts, then round up to full cartons, and keep one spare carton for future repairs.

Waste by layout

Straight-lay vinyl plank and laminate in a rectangular room typically need 5–10% extra. Tile needs about 10%, diagonal layouts about 15%, and herringbone or chevron 15–20%. Carpet is sold by the square yard from 12 ft wide rolls, so seam placement can increase waste.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?

Multiply room length by width for square feet, add 5–10% waste (more for diagonal patterns), and divide by the square feet per carton. A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 ft²; with 10% waste that is 198 ft², or 9 cartons of 22 ft².

How many square feet are in a square yard of carpet?

One square yard equals 9 square feet. Divide room square footage by 9 to get square yards, then allow extra for seams and the 12 ft roll width.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Buy about 10% extra for a straight layout and 15% for diagonal layouts, plus a few spare tiles from the same lot for future repairs.
