Basement LVP jobs live or die on the number printed on the carton—not the rounded 24 sq ft you see in ads. Drop your slab rectangle, paste net coverage from the SKU, and you'll know how many boxes to pull before the truck leaves the store. This tool handles floating click-lock vinyl only; glue-down and sheet goods need their own adhesive takeoff.
Label net coverage. RFCI treats the box number as gospel—22.3 sq ft isn't 24, and that gap costs you a return trip on a tight basement.[1]
Slab prep and flatness. Grinding high spots doesn't change area math, but it does burn planks you cut around patched low zones.
Mechanical chases. Soffits, lally columns, and sump corners each need their own rectangle added before you divide by carton size.
Underlayment and barrier. Surface cartons don't include pad rolls or 6-mil vapor film—those are separate PO lines on slab work.[2]
Example: A finished 13 ft × 19 ft basement rec room = 247 sq ft. Ten percent waste → 271.7 sq ft. Cartons labeled 22.3 sq ft net → 271.7 ÷ 22.3 = 12.18 → order 13 cartons. We kept one sealed box on the shelf after the bar sink cutout.
Order sq ft = Length × Width × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Cartons = ⌈Order sq ft ÷ Sq ft per carton⌉
247 sq ft plus 10% waste is 271.7 sq ft. Divide by 22.3 and round up—you need 13 cartons, not 12.
Rectangular slab rooms usually yes. Add waste if you're wrapping columns, building a wet bar knee wall, or changing plank direction at a stair bulkhead.
Most slab-rated LVP specs call for a moisture film—order barrier sq ft separately; it's not in the carton math here.[1]
Only if the old layer is well bonded and flat per the new brand's overlay list—otherwise strip and skim. Area math stays the same either way.
