This is the all-in-one plank takeoff—vinyl, laminate, or hardwood on the tabs up top. Remodelers use it when the homeowner hasn't picked a SKU yet but wants a ballpark carton count. Flip the tab, drop in room size, and read cartons—then fix coverage off the real box before you buy.

How we calculated this

Rectangular room math:

Floor sq ft = Length × Width

Order sq ft = Floor sq ft × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)

Cartons = ⌈Order sq ft ÷ Sq ft per carton⌉

Sq yd (if your store quotes it): Order sq yd = Order sq ft ÷ 9.[2]

Worked example: 16×11 office LVP

We priced a home office—16 ft × 11 ft = 176 sq ft. Ten percent waste → 193.6 sq ft. Cartons showed 23.8 sq ft net on the label → 193.6 ÷ 23.8 = 8.13 → 9 cartons. One carton stayed sealed for future plank swaps at the desk leg.

What affects flooring quantities?

Tab you pick. Vinyl defaults aren't laminate cartons. Switch tabs before you paste coverage from the wrong spec sheet.

Label coverage. NWFA and RFCI both say read the box—23.8 vs 24 sq ft matters on small rooms.[1]

Hallways and closets. Run those as their own rectangles. One big "L" guess usually under-orders transitions.

Stair landings. Not in this rectangle—stairs need their own takeoff.

Underlayment rolls. Surface cartons only. Underlay is a separate line on the PO.

Questions & Answers

How do I switch between vinyl, laminate, and hardwood in one takeoff?

Use the tabs above the inputs. Each one loads typical waste—you still type real coverage from the label.

Why do two rooms need separate flooring calculations?

Different cuts and waste per room. Add carton counts after you run each box-shaped area.

Does plank count on the box equal cartons?

No—use net sq ft per carton. Plank count varies by length and width.

Where does tile fit?

Use our tile calculator for boxes and grout—this page is plank flooring only.

How do I budget install cost after cartons?

Run sq ft through the flooring cost calculator for labor and materials.
