Dining rooms look simple until you hit two cased openings and a built-in hutch wall. This laminate takeoff turns inside dimensions plus the exact sq ft on the box into cartons you can actually buy. NALFA-style floating installs still need pad and transitions on their own line items—don't fold those into the carton count.
Box net sq ft. NALFA installers quote off the label—19.6 sq ft boxes aren't 20, and that half-carton gap shows up at checkout.[1]
Direction through doorways. Running planks from the kitchen opening through the dining table axis burns more end cuts than a short wall-to-wall run.
Attached pad vs. roll underlayment. Pad-on-board SKUs skip a roll PO but the surface carton math stays identical.
China cabinet dead zone. If the hutch stays put, you still order floor under it—don't subtract furniture footprint from area.
Example: An 18 ft × 13 ft dining room = 234 sq ft. Ten percent waste → 257.4 sq ft. Boxes at 19.6 sq ft net → 257.4 ÷ 19.6 = 13.13 → order 14 cartons. We ran planks toward the bay window so end joints didn't line up under the chandelier.
Order sq ft = Length × Width × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Cartons = ⌈Order sq ft ÷ Sq ft per carton⌉
234 sq ft plus 10% waste is 257.4 sq ft. Divide by 19.6 and round up—you're buying 14 cartons.
Measure the full rectangle unless you're permanently leaving the floor bare under built-ins. Most dining installs cover the whole footprint.
Ten percent on straight dining layouts is standard; add more if you're on a diagonal or wrapping a bay window seat.[1]
No roll pad if the board has foam backing, but you still need surface cartons from the label coverage—not a generic 20 sq ft guess.
Estimates are based on flooring industry standards. Actual quantities may vary by ±10% depending on room layout, cuts, and product packaging. Always confirm with your supplier before ordering.
