How to Calculate Tile Coverage

Tiles = Room Area ÷ Tile Area Add grout spacing to each tile pitch · then add waste%
  1. Measure room length and width (inside finished surfaces).
  2. Note tile length and width (face size, not sheet size).
  3. Add grout spacing to each dimension for layout pitch.
  4. Count tiles on a grid or divide area by tile area — use the higher result.
  5. Add waste (10% floors, 15% walls) and round up boxes.

This tile coverage calculator supports feet, inches, meters, and common preset sizes. For area in square yards, use our square feet to square yards calculator.

Tile Calculator FAQ

How many tiles do I need?

Divide your room’s square footage by each tile’s square footage, then add waste for cuts. This tool also counts a row-and-column grid with grout spacing for a closer order quantity.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Order 10% extra for straight floor layouts and 15% extra for walls, niches, or diagonal patterns. Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs.

What tile size is best?

Large rooms often look best with 12×24 or 24×24 floor tile; small baths work well with 12×12 or mosaics. Walls commonly use subway (6×24) or 4×12 formats.

How do I calculate tile coverage?

Coverage area = length × width. Each tile covers its face area; joints reduce the count slightly — enter grout spacing above for layout pitch.

Is this the same as a tile estimator?

Yes — this page is the canonical tile calculator. The tile estimator URL redirects here to avoid duplicate tools.
