Dining-room oak is a straight rectangle until someone asks for a herringbone inset. For standard strip or plank, measure inside walls, grab net sq ft off the carton, and add waste before you call the lumber desk. NWFA acclimation and moisture rules still apply on site—this page only sizes how many boxes hit the truck.

What affects hardwood flooring quantities?

Carton net coverage. NWFA takeoffs use the printed box number—20.5 sq ft isn't 22, and shorting a dining job leaves you matching finish batches later.[1]

Board width and grade. Wide-plank white oak eats more sq ft in end cuts when you stagger 6-inch offsets in a 14 ft run.

Engineered vs. solid packaging. Same math—only the fastener schedule changes on plywood versus nail-down strip.

Table footprint. Move furniture out; you still install under where the table returns unless it's a permanent platform.

Worked example

Example: A 14 ft × 16 ft dining room = 224 sq ft. Eight percent waste → 241.9 sq ft. Cartons at 20.5 sq ft net → 241.9 ÷ 20.5 = 11.8 → order 12 cartons. We racked boards from all twelve boxes before the first nail to blend sapwood.

How we calculated this

Order sq ft = Length × Width × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)

Cartons = ⌈Order sq ft ÷ Sq ft per carton⌉

Questions & Answers

How many cartons for 14×16 ft oak at 20.5 sq ft per box?

224 sq ft plus 8% waste is 241.9 sq ft. Divide by 20.5 and round up—order 12 cartons.

Is 8% waste enough for a dining room?

On a straight rectangle with one china-cabinet notch, usually yes. Bump to 10% if you're clipping around a bay window seat or changing direction at the butler's pantry.

Does NWFA count stairs in this rectangle?

No—treads and nosings are a separate takeoff. This tool covers the dining footprint only.[1]

Engineered oak over slab—same cartons?

Same area math. Glue-down or float specs change adhesive and moisture prep, not how many cartons you divide into.
