Quick answer: gravel cost = cubic yards × tons per yard × price per ton. A 40 × 12 ft area at 6 in is 8.89 yd³; with 12% extra that is 9.96 yd³ × 1.4 = 13.94 tons, and at $52/ton the stone costs about $725 before delivery and tax.

How to estimate gravel cost

Quarries and landscape yards price stone three ways: per ton (weighed at the scale), per cubic yard (measured by loader bucket), or per bag. To compare them you need one conversion — the stone's weight per cubic yard. This calculator works out volume first, converts to tons with the density for the stone type you pick, and multiplies by your price per ton. It opens with a 12% extra allowance and $52 per ton as placeholders; replace them with your supplier's numbers.

Cost = L × W × (depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × (1 + extra%) × tons/yd³ × $/ton $/yd³ = $/ton × tons/yd³ · $/ton = $/yd³ ÷ tons/yd³
  1. Get the volume. Length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards.
  2. Add extra for compaction, spillage, and uneven ground (10–15% is common).
  3. Convert to tons with the density for your stone (crushed stone ≈ 1.4 tons per cubic yard in this calculator).
  4. Multiply by the price per ton. If your yard quotes per cubic yard, divide that price by the density first.
  5. Add delivery, fuel surcharge, and sales tax, which this calculator does not include.

Worked example: comparing two quotes

Using the default 40 × 12 ft area at 6 in with 12% extra (13.94 tons of crushed stone):

  • Quarry A: $52 per ton → 13.94 × $52 = $725
  • Yard B quotes $65 per cubic yard → $65 ÷ 1.4 = $46.43 per ton equivalent → 9.96 yd³ × $65 = $647
  • Add each supplier's delivery fee to both totals before choosing — a cheaper stone price can be wiped out by a higher haul charge.
  • Cost per square foot: $725 ÷ 480 sq ft = $1.51/sq ft for stone alone at 6 in deep.

Per-ton vs per-yard pricing by stone type

Uses the densities built into this calculator. The middle column shows what a $52-per-ton price equals per cubic yard — heavier stone costs more per yard at the same ton price.

What drives the price of gravel

  • Stone type. Common crushed base stone and crusher run are usually the cheapest per ton. Washed, screened, and decorative stone (river rock, colored or specialty gravel) costs more because of extra processing and hauling distance.
  • Delivery. Most suppliers charge a delivery fee based on distance or zone, and some add a fuel surcharge or a minimum-load charge. A dump truck typically carries roughly 10–15 tons depending on the truck and local weight limits, so a 16-ton order may mean two trips.
  • Bulk vs. bags. A cubic yard equals 54 bags of 0.5 cu ft. At an example $5 per bag that is $270 per cubic yard — usually far more than bulk stone, so bags make sense only for small beds or hard-to-reach spots.
  • Wet stone weighs more. When you buy by the ton, washed or rain-soaked stone gives you slightly less volume for the same weight. Buying by the yard avoids this, but bucket measurement is less precise.
  • Local price changes. Prices vary widely by region and season, so the $52 default is only a placeholder. Call two or three suppliers and enter their actual price per ton.
  • Labor and equipment. Spreading and compacting are separate costs — a plate compactor or skid steer rental, or a contractor's labor charge.

Gravel cost FAQ

How do I convert gravel price per yard to price per ton?

Divide the price per cubic yard by the stone's weight in tons per cubic yard. For crushed stone at 1.4 tons per yard, $65 per yard equals about $46.43 per ton; going the other way, $52 per ton equals $72.80 per yard.

Is it cheaper to buy gravel by the ton or by the yard?

Neither is cheaper by itself — convert both quotes to the same unit using the stone's density, then add each supplier's delivery fee. Per-ton pricing is measured on a scale and is more precise, while per-yard pricing is measured by the loader bucket.

How much does 10 tons of gravel cover?

At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, 10 tons is about 7.14 cubic yards, which covers roughly 386 sq ft at 6 inches deep or 771 sq ft at 3 inches deep before any extra allowance.

Does the gravel cost calculator include delivery?

No. The estimate is tons multiplied by your price per ton. Add the supplier's delivery fee, any fuel surcharge, and sales tax separately to get the full price.

Why is decorative gravel more expensive than crushed stone?

Decorative stone is usually washed, screened to a narrow size, and often hauled from farther away, while crushed base stone is a high-volume product made close to where it is sold. Those extra steps raise the price per ton.
